“ We’ve worked with DSL for over 20 years and they’ve managed the manufacture of two key complex PCB assemblies of ours for a number of years now. Even during the particularly tumultuous times of the global component crisis, they’ve always managed to find a way to deliver what we needed and when we needed it ”

Surface Mount (SMT) PCB Assembly

Surface Mount Technology (SMT) is now the predominant method in PCB Assemblies. This is where components are attached exclusively to the top or bottom layer of a PCB. This technology has revolutionised PCB assembly and design.  It’s doen this by allowing smaller, higher-density components, effectively miniaturising circuits that once occupied entire boards.

SMT components are machine-assembled using solder paste, a Pick and Place machine, and a reflow oven. This manufacturing process is much faster per pin than traditional through-hole methods and requires minimal human intervention beyond the initial setup.

SMT’s efficiency and precision have made it a staple in modern PCB Assembly and electronics manufacturing, enabling the creation of more compact and complex devices.

Through Hole (THT) PCB Assembly

Through Hole Technology (THT) was the standard in PCB assembly before the advent of SMT. It involves placing components through pre-drilled holes on a PCB and soldering them manually on the opposite side.

Despite the rise of SMT, THT remains crucial in modern PCB assemblies due to its unique advantages.

Components attached through THT have stronger adhesion to the PCB. This is key in providing the mechanical strength necessary for parts like connectors, battery holders, and heavy capacitors to withstand usage stresses.

THT also offers greater flexibility in the size and shape of components that can be placed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to provide?
We’ll need your manufacturing pack, which typically contains gerbers, a bill-of-materials and a pick and place file. If you’re not sure what you’ve been provided is everything you need – we’ll be happy to take a look and advise.
How long is a piece of string? 😊 – there are many variables at play here such as the lead time of components, how fast we want the PCB to be build (faster = more expensive), how complex your board is (e.g. a double sided board will take twice as long as a single sided, as it has to go through the line twice!) and the scheduling/capacity internally. DSL have the capability to produce fast turn prototypes as we have solutions to all of the above, but as a general rule of thumb, building faster increases cost.
DSL utilise a state-of-the-art 3D AOI (automated optical inspection) machine that visually inspects every component and every solder joint from multiple angles at a crazily high resolution. We can ensure that the PCBAs have been manufactured correctly, but if you want assurances the boards are functionally working, we’d recommend also functionally testing the PCBAs prior to dispatch – utilising either your test procedure/equipment or working with you to develop them.
Firstly, prototypes are rarely perfect. The prototyping phase is about two things, testing the design functionally works and optimising it prior to entering production. DSL’s Design Health Check service uses our in-house PCBA design engineers to review your design to iron out any of the typical mistakes that can be made when designing PCBAs to ensure your prototypes are as close to production-ready as they can be. This is a free service that we offer, find our more here.

Quantity is king. Building a small number of units will always equate to a high unit cost, the more you can build in a single run – the lower the cost of each unit. DSL enable our clients to get the best of both worlds by building large quantity runs, but allowing you to call them off on a weekly/monthly basis with entirely flexible PCB Assembly delivery schedules where you only pay when we ship you units.
